THIS is why your resolutions fail...

The new year is almost here! Do you have a new year’s resolution yet? I sure hope not!

Did I really just say that? 😳 Yup! It’s true. I do NOT like resolutions. Because I don’t like to fail. And setting new year’s resolutions is setting yourself up to fail. 🙅‍♀️ Only 10% (or less) of people actually follow through with their New Year’s resolutions. I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t like those odds. So, I do something else instead, that gives me a MUCH better chance of success.

I set SMART goals. 🎯

New year’s resolutions fail because they’re too vague and too broad. They are just a grand statement with no real plan behind them. So, I'm not setting a resolution for 2023. I am setting clear and tangible goals that I can take daily action on instead. 👌 Sound like something you want to consider for the New Year, too?

You’ve probably heard of SMART goals, but here’s a refresher so you can head into the new year feeling more confident about what you want to achieve!👇

1. Specific

This means narrowing down exactly what it is you want to accomplish. You will quickly see how big items (like the most common resolutions) become many SMART goals. This needs to be first because sometimes this is where your big vision gets broken into smaller goals. And only from there can you really get more specific.

  • What exactly do you want to accomplish?

  • Who needs to be involved?

  • Where will it happen?

  • How will you achieve the ultimate goal?

2. Measurable

This is all about objectivity. If you don’t have anything to measure, you don’t have anything to track or celebrate. Usually, this involves quantifying or assigning numbers to your goals, but you may be able to measure progress another way (ahem, progress pics anyone?? 👉). The point is that you are able to see progress, and that you have an end point to clearly identify.

  • What metrics will you use to determine if you’ve met your goal?

  • How will you know you’ve "made it?"

  • How often will your measure your progress?

3. Attainable

Focus on what you can & need to do to make your goals actually doable. This may require developing new skills, changing attitudes or getting some support or accountability. If you don’t currently possess the necessary tools/skills, consider what it would take to attain them so you can reach your goal.

  • Do I have the tools/skills needed to achieve this goal?

  • What am I missing?

  • Have others done this before? How did they do it?

4. Relevant

Does this goal fit into your broader vision for your life? Each goal needs to be relevant to your overall values. This is where you look into the deeper reason WHY behind your goal. If it’s not deeply rooted enough, you’ll never stick to it. Don't do what someone else is expecting of you or what you think you should accomplish.

  • Does it match my core values?

  • Does it fit into my established priorities?

  • Am I doing this for me or for someone else?

5. Time-based

Give yourself a time frame for accomplishing your goal. Without a time-frame tied to your goal, there isn’t a sense of urgency and you’ll be less motivated to make it happen.

  • Does your goal have a final deadline?

  • By when do you want to achieve your goal?

  • Are there scheduled milestones along the way to meeting this goal?

Proverbs 19:21 says: "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand."

Are you asking for God’s direction when making plans and setting goals? Don’t forget to invite Him in, prayerfully asking for His will to be done in your life and to guide the desires of your heart. He asks for us to be bold and make plans with our life, but ultimately His will prevails. I pray you find that balance in your life and co-create your new year’s goals with Him.
